Classifications Of Hazardous Areas and Electrical Protection
Safety should always be given utmost importance in any facility. Industry personnel must always be protected against, hazardous environments, fires, explosions, and other risks. Potential risks should always be identified and accounted for by preparing and placing risk mitigation plans and procedures, that being said, locations that are prone to natural disasters must be carefully reviewed and proper safety measures should be taken by industrial and commercial facilities in such areas. For example, the coastal region in the Southeast United States is a magnet for tornados, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, Hence, facilities and plants located there should implement solid safety strategies to protect their electrical equipment and personnel from outdoor dangers like rain, flooding, dirt, etc.
Spike Electric provides custom design services for control panels in hazardous locations. Our design complies perfectly with all NEMA & UL standards to provide maximum safety and protection against potential risks and dangers in hazardous environments.
What Do We Mean by “Hazardous Location”?
A hazardous area is defined as any location that consists of high concentration of dangerous elements like flammable gases, vapers, and dust. A control panel designed or fabricated to be used in a hazardous location should be carefully marked and labeled to denote where the panel can and cannot be used. When labeling and marking, consider the following:
- Class of the hazardous location. Division of the hazardous location
- The group to which the hazardous location belongs to
- The maximum temperature that is considered safe for the operation of the control panel. This temperature should be 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degrees Fahrenheit ambient.
- Should other condition apply, the manufacturer must Identify, verify, and mark/label the panel for such cases.
Control panels have multiple applications in hazardous locations. Following are some examples of hazardous locations in which custom control panels are utilized:
- Oil refineries
- Food Processing
- Chemical Plants
- Landfills
- Petro Chemical refineries
- Wastewater plants
Custom Control Panels and Electrical Protection Solutions in Hazardous Environments by Spike Electric
Spike Electric provides reliable and quality electric protection solutions. We have an excellent team of technicians and engineers on board who design and build custom control panels for efficient operations in hazardous locations and environments where dangerous concentrations of flammable and combustible gases, vapours, and liquids may exist. They offer full protection against the potential risks of ignitions or explosions.
The team of engineers and technicians at Spike Electric build, develop, and design UL- and CUL-certified control panels for hazardous environments. Additionally, we also craft control panels certified according to the specifications of NNNY- and NNNY7 regulations. These control panels come along with sturdy metal cast NEMA 7 explosion-proof enclosures.
In which hazardous locations can these control panels be used? Note the following categories:
- Class 1 Division 1- Explosion-Proof
- Class 1 Division 1- Type X Purged or Pressurized
- Class 1 Division 2- Type Z Purged or Pressurized
- Class 1 Division 2
- Class 1 Groups A, B, C & D
- Class 1 Division 2, Groups A, B, C & D
