You might have noticed that the connectors of our Cam-Lok® power cables & portable power equipment come in different colors.
What do the colors signify? The different colors of the connectors denote the several distinct functions of the terminals. Why is the distinction of colors important? When the connectors are shown in different colors, users will be able to accurately verify the precise phase concerning color coordination.
Common colors that are used in the US are green, white, black, red, and blue for 240V. Green, white, brown, orange, & yellow for 480V. And green, white, black on all power phases for 600V.
Are The Colors Determined By The NEC?
Many people believe that the different colors for the connectors in the Cam-Lok® power cable are decided by the National Electric Code or NEC. However, that is not the case.
According to the NEC regulations, only the green color should be utilized for the Equipment Grounding Conductor, and the white or grey colors should be used to denote the Neutral conductor. These colors shouldn’t be used to specify any other purpose, and likewise, their purpose shouldn’t be used in association with other colors. This is the only specification related to colors that have been defined by the NEC for general power distribution. The NEC has not determined any other color-coded specifications.
You should remember that the color black was used to denote neutral. Now it is known as a phase color. Blue was previously used to signify the phase, whereas now it is used to identify a neutral. Always ensure all equipment is off with a lock out tag out before installing or disconnecting any Cam-Lok® connection cables from equipment.
