NNNY Defined

Control panels intended for installation in hazardous (classified) locations are covered under Control Panels and Assemblies for Use in Hazardous Locations (NNNY).

NRBX Defined

Control panels provided with intrinsically safe circuits for extension into hazardous (classified) locations are covered under Industrial Control Panels Relating to Hazardous Locations (NRBX).

How to make a control panel explosion proof?

You cannot turn a standard sheet metal control panel into an explosion proof panel. The entire principle behind the explosion proof panel is for hazardous gas to enter the enclosure then should a spark ignite the gas the explosion would be contained in the enclosure. This would not work with a sheet metal enclosure. You can use a sheet metal enclosure that is rated for hazardous location like the Crouse Hinds XLVS-Excell enclosure with intrinsically safe components only. You cannot use any standard UL components in any sheet metal enclosures, all components must be intrinsically safe. The enclosures Nema rating should be Nema 7/9 it shall be strong enough to resist an internal explosion without suffering breakage or permanent deformation (this is tested with a static overpressure 1.5 times the reference pressure measured during type tests, applied for duration of between 10 seconds and 60 seconds).
b) The passages between the inside and the outside of the enclosure (called lamination joints or flame-proof joints) shall be able to prevent the ignition of the surrounding atmosphere.
Hazardous Location Control Panels are built in a Nema 7 cast enclosure like the Crouse-Hinds ECP enclosure. All entries in the box are drilled and tapped, control operators are threaded into the lid of the enclosure and conduit entries are drilled and tapped for hazardous location fittings to connect the conduit.

Can you use a Myers hub’s on a Nema 7 Cast explosion proof panel?

A Myers Hub will not screw into the cast explosion proof box. You must use fittings like a Crouse-Hinds EYD or EYS. After the wires are ran you must seal the fitting with Chico & Fiber.

Why do you need a UL cUL/UL NNNY/NRBX Explosion-Proof Panel or a Non-UL panel?

The introduction of the new Article 409 for Industrial Control Panels in the 2005 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) drew increased attention to installations of industrial control panels. Industrial control panels (ICPs) with the UL Mark are installable to the NEC and have a distinct competitive edge in the marketplace. Panels that are not built by an authorized UL explosion proof panel builder run the risk of not following the current NEC code.

In 2014 Spike Electric became an industrial control cUL/UL 698A NNNY/NRBX panel builder
in accordance with UL 508A & implemented all of the panel builder requirements into our ISO 9001 QMS procedures.

Benefits of using an explosion proof panel builder

  • Hazardous location explosion-proof control panels with the UL Mark are installable to the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Assurance that a 3rd party UL engineer does random quality checks in their facility to ensure the standard and quality are following the UL guidelines
  • Increased safety knowing only NEC & UL tested products will be used in a UL listed hazardous location assembly
  • Panel designs are engineered to follow cUL/UL 508A & NEC or IEC requirements
  • Site built panels do not have the same quality as a panel built in a manufacturing facility with qualified technicians
  • Testing and documentation control
  • Better ascetics with wiring procedures and qualified personnel to do your lay out.

Explosion proof Industrial control panels with the cUL/UL Mark are installable to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and give you a competitive edge in the marketplace.
